Managing Stress

In college there are many things that can cause you to get stressed out whether it be financial situations, relationships, homework, grades, ect. Once stress is reached, the way you react to it is your stress response. Your stress response is usually based on how you have reacted to stress in the past. The way you react to stress is either physical or emotional. Someone who reacts to stress in a immediate physical way usually takes the fight or flight response. The fight or flight response is when you either run away from your stress or fight it straight on. I've noticed that I'm typically a flighter. Whenever I'm encountered with stress I tend to get away from it whatever way possible. A person who reacts to stress in a emotional way on the other hand, effects the way you feel and think. How you think and what you feel is different with each person depending on the stress. If stress is severe enough, it can cause people to slowly shut down and at that point they need medical attention. If stress is avoided but still there for a prolonged period of time, you could be putting your health and quality of life at risk. Stress then can effect your body physically such as by pain, weaker immune system, change in your sleep schedule, and a change in appetite and emotionally that amount of stress could lead to suicidal thoughts. On the positive side stress can be a good motivator. Usually when I'm stressing out about something like a big test, it forces me to study. Or if I'm stressing out about money, it motivates me to get a job. etc. In conclusion stress can be a good thing if managed correctly but if you handle it the wrong way, it could have devastating effects.

Diversity

ASU is a very diverse University with people from all around the globle. The only thing diversity can do is make a school better for many reasons. One is that diversity is a great way to meet new people that come from different environments that you can learn from. People that come from different backrounds bring ranges of views into the classroom. From my experience, in my history class, lots of history is involved with religion and when we have discussions in class, many different people with different religous backrounds get involved and end up clashing which in turn produces a good discussion. Another way that diversity is beneficial is that it allows you to learn about people and places different from your own. You get to learn about other culutres and how people live in different parts of the world.

Academic Integrity

The reason that we are taught about academic Integrity is because many people come to ASU from different types of learning environments. Every student that is attending ASU has already agreed to the academic code of conduct. There are many different types of academic dishonesty for example but not limited to using someone else's work, using sources your professor didn't allow, or not citing your sources correctly. I believe that students who act academically dishonest are just cheating themselves. It may get them the grade, but what really matters is if you know the material. There are many reasons students should be academically honest and my favorite one is that if I know I do all my own work, I will value my degree way more. Another reason is that you will gain respect from your teachers. If you are caught being academically dishonest, the consequences are threatening to you being able to attend ASU being the worst. If your lucky you will receive a failing grade for the assignment or even the course. To avoid being academically dishonest make sure you check with your professor about his/her policies. So just be smart and do your own work because "Integrity is what we do, what we say, and what we say we do"(Don Galer). Never try to cheat the system because chances are you won't beat it.

Sustainability

Sustainability to me is defined as leaving the smallest ecological footprint possible on this earth. Today, we are experiencing the affects from our ecological footprints in the past. For example, global warming is starting to take a drastic effect on our climate and it is due to our overuse of fossil fuels. Since fossil fuels are a known limited resource, we weren't being sustainable when the car was invented because one day we won't be able to use gasoline powered cars. There are many other resources that are limited such as water that needs to be sustained. Since there is only 1% of it on this earth we need to cherish it but because we don't, that's why there are people in third world countries suffering from water shortages. The significance of these issues is that they could have been prevented and should have been prevented because when you take natural resources for granted, there will be a punishment down the road. So for me personally to represent sustainability I live my life as green as possible. I take short showers, turn off the water in between shaving, recycle, ride my skateboard where I need to go, and only buy things that are energy efficient or environment friendly. Like Gandhi says "Live simply so that others simply live." I live by this motto because I want my future generations to experience the world as a beautiful place, rather than just a mine.

Student Success

If you asked me before I did this module, I would say that being successful at ASU would consist of just getting good grades but it turns out there is a lot more to it. Getting good grades is only part of being successful at ASU. One other part of being successful is how you connect with people you haven't normally interacted with. ASU is a very diverse University with people from all kinds of different backgrounds that you can learn from. A second part is how you balance your time. You need to make sure you set 2-3 hours of time for homework and studying for each 1 hour your in class. I find it better do just do your homework the day it is assigned to get it finished rather than put it off and end up having a big work load at the end of the week. Also it is very important to be actively engaged in class. If you have questions, get help quickly by a tutor or visit your instructors during office hours. Its also important that you give your brain time to rest. For example, if you have a test the next day don't stay up hanging out with your roommates even though you studied for many hours. Another way to be successful is to get involved in the University. Join a club or a student organization. It is a good way to meet new people. So if you can do these things and do them well, you will be successful in college. In conclusion , "To succeed... you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you. (Tony Dorsett: Famous Success Quotes) For me is getting a degree
and I know I can achieve my goal if I follow the steps to student success.
